Complexity Arrangements for Sustained Innovation

Today our paper on “Complexity Arrangements for Sustained Innovation: Lessons from 3M Corporation” was published in the June 2011 issue of Organization Studies. It was the lead article in a special issue entitled Towards the Ecological Style: Embracing Complexity in Organizational Research, guest edited by Kevin Dooley and Haridimos Tsoukas.

Drawing on an in-depth study of innovation practices and innovation journeys at 3M Corporation, we identify how combinations of practices – which we conceptualize as complexity arrangements – afford multiple agentic orientations simultaneously for the actors involved, thereby facilitating sustained innovation.

You can read the abstract here. A preprint of the paper is available on SSRN. If you would like a copy of the paper as published, please send me an email.
